Travel the route that linked the Middle East with Greece and the Eternal City with Brindisi. During the Middle Ages, this was a pilgrimage path; from here, one could travel to the sea, cross it, and arrive in the Holy Land. As the journey progresses, you’ll see the Roman catacombs of the earliest Christian settlements, including the Catacombs of San Callisto and Santa Domitilla.
They were composed of tunnels, through the walls of which burials had been excavated. When you walk through the galleries, you may admire the pictorial ornamentation, the lavish sarcophagus reliefs, and the tuff-carved buildings. The Catacombs and the Appia Antica are open-air museums with typical antique stones, lovely rows of pine trees, and remains covered in blooming vegetation. Visiting them is like embarking on a historical and artistic voyage.
