One of the most intriguing areas in the city is San Clemente. A medieval basilica was built on top of an early Christian structure, which was in turn built on structures from the first century AD, making up this complex of three buildings. The Case Romane del Celio is one of Rome’s most significant archaeological sites.

The tiered complex phases of the area range from residential use to a luxurious residence and a structure with shops. A maze of frescoed rooms await you as you enter by an old Roman road. The paintings in these rooms are an amazing testament to their beauty and historical significance. One of the most important locations for Christian archaeology is a monument that provides insight into both ordinary life in ancient Rome and the sensitive times of the early decades of Christianity.
